Welcome to my little home in the cloud! My name is Marcin Pilat and I'm currently living in the very green (unless it's winter) Ottawa - Canada's capital.
In 2009, I have completed my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary in the area of Artificial Life. I was part of the Evolutionary Swarm & Design (ESD) group led by Dr. Christian Jacob. My research interests are mainly in the area of Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Life, Artificial Ecosystems, Evolutionary Theory, Simulations, Swarm Intelligence, Evolutionary Computation, and Robotics. For more information, please see my Projects page.
I'm a Senior Software Developer at Optiwave Systems Inc. working on design and simulation software for the optics industry. I recently finished a 2 year post doc at the Artificial Life Laboratory at Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan. I was researching evolutionary processes through physical simulations. Previously, I worked at Defence R&D Canada's Centre for Operational Research and Analysis (DRDC CORA) as a Visiting Fellow through the NSERC Visiting Fellowship in Canadian Government Labs. I worked on modelling and simulation of complex socio-technical defence systems. For more information, please see my CV.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing video games (mostly RPGS). My all time favourite games include: Ultima series, Elder Scrolls series, Thief series, World of Warcraft. I am also interested in astronomy, backyard stargazing, and astrophysics. I like mathematics and enjoy problem solving. I also enjoy stamp collecting - specializing in old worldwide (pre 1940), China, and Germany - and coin collecting. The music I usually listen to is jpop, kpop, eurodance, eurobeat, techno, and trance. I enjoy cross country skiing, bicycling, and hiking.
